If you are competent and have impressed the admission committee of your desired university, you will receive an offer letter. The UK university extends two types of offer letters to such students – conditional offer letters and unconditional offer letter. Both these signify that you have a stern chance at the university. However, they do have some differences that you must meet.
In this blog, we will discuss the types of offer letters in the UK and the next steps associated with them.
Understanding Offer Letters in the UK
The universities in the UK, much like anywhere else, offer conditional and unconditional offer letters to students who pique their interests. While an unconditional letter acts as a formal acceptance of the students, a conditional letter comes with terms to follow. This type of offer letter indicates that you can gain an acceptance if and only if you meet their specified requirements. Some of the common conditions are in terms of academic background, English proficiency score and State of Purpose (SOP) among others. Typically, you have 2-3 months to fulfil these requirements after which the offer dilutes itself. It further takes some time for the university to assess the revised documents. Hence, make sure to meet the deadline as soon as you can.

Changing Conditional Offer Letter to Unconditional Offer Letter
Universities have standard guidelines and eligibility criteria for all applicants. If you have received a conditional offer letter, it means that even knowing you meet their eye, you still need to meet some of these criteria. Your offer letter will specify the requirements needed from you. Some of the most common requirements are the mark sheet and institute leaving certificate from your last course, in case you had applied before your final exams, improved results from your English proficiency test, financial certificates or a strong SOP. Some universities may demand a critical medical certificate in order to confirm your acceptance.

Choosing Between Several Offers
Firstly, how does it feel to be the chosen one? When you receive multiple offer letters from different universities, you gain an edge. You must take your time to review each offer letter. It’s highly likely that all of them would be either conditional or unconditional. Regardless, assess each of them carefully. Review the course, its modules and overall program structure along with the universities’ ranking and reputation on your choice of course. Research deeper into their department, faculties and achievements to measure your future with them. Now that you can make a choice, consider the university location, lifestyle, international student ratio and other factors that can affect your overall experience.
Make an informed decision by weighing in your interests and goals. If you have a conditional letter(s), you already know the drill. As long as you can meet the university’s requirements, you can choose to accept any of them. Alternatively, you can plan to go with neither and wait for your dream university to respond. However, don’t wait for too long and secure one spot before the deadline.

Obtaining a CAS for Visa
After getting accepted unconditionally, students need to request a Confirmation for Acceptance of Studies (CAS) for their UK university. This process requires them to go into an interview, called ‘Pre-CAS Interview’. Students need to prepare to answer some questions on their academic and work experience, expectations and so on on the given interview date. The university hosts this interview to confirm your ability and interest in its course. As much as it is for you to clarify if the university is, in fact, the right fit for you. However, this interview is like no other. It will demand you to unravel your inner thoughts on the course, your future in it and everything that led you to it.

Read and follow the instructions mentioned in the document. After paying the first instalment or semester fee to the university as and when mentioned in the letter. After that, this is the time to apply for visas, scholarships, loans and medical insurance.
Facing Rejection
Students keep waiting for a simple yes and no knowing it could be life-changing. But not always do they get a positive response. It is not always their limitations that cause the rejection. Sometimes, the university has always filled its seats to allow any more international students. Once you meet the requirements in your conditional offer letter, it turns unconditional and you may start with the next step as mentioned in the document. If you don’t, you need to redo the entire university application process for courses you can. Or try in the next intake. It is sad but it is okay. Come back in the next intake and come back stronger!
