TOEFL Exam 2024: Fees, Syllabus, Dates, Registration & Results

The Test of English as a Foreign Language, commonly called TOEFL, is one of the most renowned English tests. Conducted and governed by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), TOEFL has helped more than 35 million people worldwide secure admissions internationally. Not only is it accepted by top universities around the world but it also significantly helps them land scholarships. In fact, more than 11,000 universities in over 160 countries accept TOEFL results.

Types of TOEFL
The ETS has 3 types of TOEFL currently practised around the world. TOEFL iBT is their online exam. Notably, it is the most recommended test in the TOEFL category because of its hassle-free nature. Students can opt for this test to take the test online at their designated centre. The duration of this test is 3 hours. The test did have a paper-based version before known as TOEFL pBT. However, it was discontinued a couple of years ago.
Secondly, TOEFL iBT Home Edition inclines towards the conform and convenience of the applicant. Apart from the live remote proctors and the involvement of artificial intelligence technology, the test is very much the same as the first. Lastly, the TOEFL Essential Test is a newly launched design by the assessment experts at ETS. The test duration is only 90 minutes, ie. 1.5 hours with the same syllabus as the other tests. With the help of certified trained humans and AI tools, the ETS ensures more accuracy of TOEFL with this newly developed version.
TOEFL Exam 2024
ETS TOEFL 2024 is an English proficiency test for students aspiring to study in English-speaking countries. As the universities there have accepted the language for their routine communication, scoring decently in TOEFL is a must. The ETS TOEFL weighs students’ reading, listening, writing and speaking skills on a scale of 0-120. Students can take the exam either online or offline at different dates throughout the year. The cost of the test application is Rs 16,900 per scheduled test. Further, they can turn their TOEFL results to their advantage during college and university admission, scholarship application and visa application.
Exam Date
Students can apply for any TOEFL exam as soon as they decide on their course and university. It is advisable that they appear for the test 2-3 months prior to their university application deadline. Regardless, the test is available on multiple dates available throughout the year. They can choose their exam centres available as listed below or choose to appear at home. They can take the test as many times as they need. However, as soon as they schedule the second test, the score of the previous ones becomes invalid. Notably, they must also wait for at least 3 days before registering for another test.
Score Validity
The scorecard of TOEFL is available and valid for up to 2 years from the result declaration date. Students can only use it as long as it is valid after which they need to retake the test. It goes without saying that only the score from the last exam taken will be valid.
Exam Fee
The registration fee for the TOEFL iBT and TOEFL Home is INR 16,900 while that of TOEFL is INR 9,996.78. Extra charges may apply in case of late registration, rescheduling and reviewing scores. In most cases, the fee is non-refundable. Students who wish to retake the test, need to pay the same amount again.
Eligibility
The ETS has set no eligibility criteria for the test. Students who have completed their 12th grade can appear for TOEFL till whatever age they wish. Moreover, the governing body has set no academic qualifications either. Individuals aspiring to study or work in an English-speaking country can take the test.
Registration Process
The registration window for ETS TOEFL is open around the clock. Students can apply online with their computers, laptops, iPads or phones. Alternatively, they can apply in person via an authorised agent. Before doing that, consult with your education consultant. Students can register and choose their exam date, time and centre (if applicable). After uploading the required document, they can book their slots by paying the TOEFL administration fees of INR 16,900. Ideally, the documents required are a photo ID proof, photographs and a signature. As a matter of fact, if the name in the application doesn’t match that in the ID proof, the application is likely to get rejected. Further, the documents must be original copies of a physical ID.

Currently, there are 39 cities where students can choose their exam centre. The list is mentioned below:

Exam Pattern
The TOEFL iBT exam question paper is divided into 4 sections – reading, listening, speaking and writing. Each section has a score range between 0-30. Consequently, the total score that can be obtained ranges between 0-120. Students need to complete their exam within 3 hours and 30 minutes. However, the TOEFL Essential varies in both pattern and time.
The listening and reading sections both have 30-45 questions to be answered in 21-34 minutes depending on the number of questions in the set of question papers chosen. Further, the writing section has about 15-19 questions and 2 tasks to do in 24-30 minutes. The speaking section has 3 tasks with 19 responses to do under 13 minutes. Lastly, there is a personal video statement round with 2 questions of 5 minutes in total.
Scoring System and Results
Exclusively, students can view their unofficial reading and listening scores right at the end of the test. The final scores are made available within 6-10 days of the test regardless of the exam type in their ETS account. Additionally, students will be notified about it on their registered email ID. They can send their scores to up to 4 institutes selected on their dashboards. Additionally, they can also request a physical report card that will be delivered within 10-12 days.
