Financial Aspects
The education system in the US is not cheap. Regardless, it matches the quality of education they offer. While the highest annual tuition fee for the major courses in a community college is $20,000 or about INR 16.66 Lakh, this is where the regular courses in a private university start. Further, students can bank on the expense of $40,000 for undergraduate, $45,000 for postgraduate and $55,000 for doctoral programs. The fees vary with courses, universities and locations. They don’t, however, have many options for language courses except English. Generally, these courses range between $700 to $2,000 a month.
Apart from the tuition fees, students can expect other payments, particularly towards rent, transportation, health insurance and food. The list can go on and on depending on their lifestyle but this is the bare needs to fulfill. The USA estimates the average cost of living as around $10,000 to $12,000 per annum. In other words, the cost of living is between INR 8.33 Lakh to INR 10 Lakh.
Scholarships
Luckily, there is financial aid too. There are several university and country-specific scholarships to help lessen the financial burden of the students. While most of these are merit-based, they do consider the needs of the students while reviewing their applications. Some of the popular scholarships are the Fulbright-Nehru Master’s Fellowship, Upakar Indian Scholarship Foundation and SEED Foundation Scholarship. Students aspiring to study in universities within New York City can apply for the AEF Scholarship.
Further, the LSEF – UMass Scholarship is limited to admissions to the University of Massachusetts. Whereas, the Akhtarali H. Tobaccowala Fellowship helps MBA students to enrol at the University of Chicago and the American University Emerging Global Leader Scholarship at American University, Washington. Exclusively, the Asian Women in Business Scholarship Fund helps Indian women live their dreams. Essentially, the Cornell University Tata Scholarship and the Stanford Reliance Dhirubhai Fellowship Program are supported by the great businessmen of India.
Admission Procedure
Indian students aspiring to pursue their next course in the USA can apply on any of the two intakes – fall and spring. While some universities have their own entrance tests, most consider TOEFL, GMAT, and the GRE. But most importantly, they need to match the admission criteria. To apply to any of the American Universities, students must have at least 60% in their previous course, proof of funds and a valid passport. However, those with lower grades can try their luck too. Equally important, they need to present a Letter of Recommendation (LoR) from the previous university/school and a Statement of Purpose (SoP). Lastly, they need an IELTS score of 6.6 band or PTE score between 50-70. The more, the better their chances of admission!
